NATURE AND SCOPE OF ASSIGNMENT
The mission of the Office of Workforce Development for Teachers and Scientists (WDTS) is to help ensure that DOE and the Nation have a sustained pipeline of highly skilled and diverse science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) workers. This is accomplished partly by support of undergraduate internships and faculty programs.
The Department of Energy/Office of Science encourages undergraduate students and recent graduate who have not begun graduate studies to pursue science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) careers by providing research experiences at the Department of Energy (DOE) National Laboratories. In addition, The Visiting Faculty Program (VFP), seeks to increase the research competitiveness of faculty members and their students at institutions historically underrepresented in the research community in order to expand the workforce vital to the Department of Energy (DOE) mission areas. Selected faculty and students perform research, under the guidance of laboratory staff scientists or engineers, on projects related to ongoing programs.
This includes the following programs:
- Community College Internship (CCI)
- Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internship (SULI)
- Visiting Faculty Program (VFP)
Individuals who want to be considered for these positions must first apply for an Office of Scienceinternship and select LLNL as a first or second choice at website at http://science.energy.gov/wdts/about/.The website will also provide information regarding each program’s requirements, length of assignment, benefits, and deadlines.
- Under close supervision, students will participate in research in assigned area.
- Complete the full 10-16 week program.
- Complete the entrance and exit surveys through the online system provided at the beginning and the end of the internship.
- Make an oral or poster presentation on the outcome of their research activities.
- Complete and submit a research project report.
- Submit an abstract of their research in the required format.
- Submit a one-page peer review of another intern’s talk or poster. (SULI & VFP interns only)
- Attend all scheduled events including lectures, tours and group activities.
- Students should expect to spend approximately 40 hours a week working on their research projects or participating in the provided professional development opportunities.
- Perform all assignments in accordance with ES&H, security, and business practice requirements and policies.
- Notification of acceptance into one of the Office of Science Workforce Development for Teachers and Scientists (WDTS) programs.
- Ability to apply basic skills in engineering, scientific, or physics principles to solve technical problems.
- Demonstrated effective communication skills.
- Ability to present and communicate concepts and ideas.
Pre-Placement Medical Exam: None required.
Pre-Employment Drug Test: External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.
Anticipated Clearance Level: None.
