For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.

We have multiple openings for health physics summer interns in the Environment, Safety and Health (ES&H) Team 2 and the Radiation Protection Functional Area within the ES&H Directorate. You will interact with all levels of personnel at the Laboratory including managers, experimenters, technicians, and other personnel that may be outside the ES&H Directorate.  You will be mentored by staff members to complete a project, or series of projects, that combine hands-on experience with technical knowledge. 

Essential Duties
At the Undergraduate non-exempt Level:
- Will assist the NIF Rad Ops Group in the development of procedures and protocols for implementing an alternative Technical Basis Document (TBD) for managing potentially activated materials.
- Project may also focus on expanding the TBD or other areas of the NIF facility which would require additional analysis of existing modelling data.
- Gather and analyze data or information in support of technical projects.
- May present work through presensations and/or posters sessions.
At the Graduate exempt Level:
- Student will perform technical assignments of a basic degree and complexity and provide advanced technical support to the Spectroscopy Lab/Whole Body Counting Group.
- Will work with technical and scientific personnel on a project involving a single sphere neutron spectrometer and development of a neutron spectrum deconvolution routine for the sphere. 
 
Qualifications
  At the Undergraduate non-exempt Level:
- Must be a continuing college or university student in good standing at an accredited institution pursuing an undergraduate degree in physics, health physics, nuclear engineering, or closely related technical field.
- Strong analytical skills.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment.
- Proficient with standard Microsoft Office suite including Outlook, PowerPoint, Word and Excel.
At the Graduate exempt Level:
- Must be a continuing college or university student in good standing at an accredited institution pursuing a graduate degree (or a recent graduate) in health physics, nuclear engineering, or closely related field.
- Experience applying Monte Carlo modeling.
- Demonstrated academic achievement in subject matter associated with radiation safety or radiological transport/modeling.

Note:   This is a Temporary Student Intern appointment.  This assignment is for a full time position during the summer academic break; full time during the academic semester/quarter, or a year-round part time position during the academic year and full time during academic breaks.)
